The mission of the South African Red Cross Society (SARCS) is to render services and to prevent and alleviate human suffering and to foster human dignity in all communities by addressing the basic needs of the people, in accordance with the following seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement:


- Humanity - to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being;

- Impartiality – to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs;

- Neutrality – we may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature;

- Independence – must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles;

- Voluntary Service – it is a voluntary relief movement promoted in any manner by desire for gain;

- Unity – it must open to all, it must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory; and

- Universality – all society has equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other.


The Red Cross Manguang Branch in Free State was re-established in 2000 and has four districts under it covering the entire Free State. Therefore the province need to have three branches as per SARCS status to qualify as a province, which is the process underway and expectation are this will be finalised by 2014. However, to date the only one that has really worked hard and is ready for launch is the Fezile Dabi district. There has been a proper record keeping and compliance to financial procedures and internal control. Through the support of Norwegian RC for the branch to computerised its accounting transaction. Pastel partner was adopted and training provided by an external consulting firm.


Mangaung Branch is working with volunteers throughout the Free State to make sure that the community receives our help that is why we say always needed, always there.

SARCS Core Programmes:

- Health and Care – Community First Aid, HIV and AIDS, Youth Peer Education, Community Health Education and Promotion;

- Disaster Management – Disaster Preparedness and Response, Restoring Family links;

- Humanitarian Values – to know the Fundamental Principles;

- Organisational Development – Empowerment of youth, Focus on young Women in Development, Branch development and volunteer management, Human resource development, Governance and management development.

Language Proficiency - Red Cross understands the diversity of the community on the basis of language. It has already committed to upholding the language and cultural diversity of our country, in particular the Free State.
